In the early morning of Friday 24 May 2019, our staff once again stumbled upon a corpse from the Second World War. The find was once again made during detection and approach work for abandoned munitions items in Bemmel.

After it became clear during the layer excavation that ECG had again found the mortal remains of a missing soldier, the excavation work was immediately stopped and the authorities of the Bergings- en Identificatie Dienst Koninklijke Landmacht (BIDKL) from Soesterberg were warned. That same day, the human remains were expertly excavated by the BIDKL.

Again, this was a German soldier, most likely missing. His helmet was also found and appeared to have suffered war damage. The mortal remains were recovered almost in their entirety and were found under an existing cable route. The final, possible identification will have to take place in the future at and by the BIDKL at Soesterberg. After that the missing soldier will be buried on the German war cemetery in IJsselsteyn.

The location where the mortal remains were found. The German helmet (bottom right) and the cables of the existing route (next to it and above it) can be seen.
